The Best Playgrounds in San Diego: 17 Family Favorites Starting in North County
If you're looking for a great playground in San Diego, you don't have to go far. North County San Diego is home to some of the best playgrounds in the county, from oceanfront play areas and shaded neighborhood parks to enormous adventure playgrounds and inclusive play spaces.
One of the best things about living in North County is the variety. Within a relatively short drive of Solana Beach, families can find playgrounds with climbing structures, ziplines, splash pads, skateparks, beaches, lagoons and miles of trails.
I've put together this list of my favorite 17 playgrounds worth knowing about, starting in the Solana Beach and Del Mar area and moving north through Cardiff, Encinitas, Carmel Valley, Carlsbad and Oceanside before heading south toward Mission Bay and downtown San Diego.
The order is based on approximate location from Solana Beach, not a ranking of the playgrounds.
1. San Dieguito County Park | Del Mar/Solana Beach
Location: 1628 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Del Mar
Best for: Nature, playgrounds, events, and a full family outing
San Dieguito County Park is one of the best all-around family parks near Solana Beach.
The 125-acre park offers multiple play areas along with trails, open grassy areas, picnic facilities and recreational amenities. The park's Activity Hill adds another dimension to the experience, with nature-based activities and opportunities for kids to explore. Don't miss the views from Osuna Overlook and the Hawk's nest. There is a lovely lower aspect of the park with grass and a pond - accessible with parking at 15938 El Camino Real, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92091
The big advantage here is that the playground isn't the entire experience. Kids can play, explore the trails, run across the lawns and enjoy the park's natural setting.
Why I like it: It's close to Solana Beach and walkable from my house, but feels like a destination. You can easily spend a couple of hours here without feeling like you've done the same thing twice.
2. La Colonia Playground | Solana Beach
Location: 715 Valley Avenue, Solana Beach
Best for: A convenient local playground with plenty of room to play
If you're looking for a playground right in Solana Beach, La Colonia Park is an obvious choice.
The park is a longtime community gathering place with a children's play area, open lawn, picnic areas, sports facilities and a skatepark. It offers plenty of options for families who want to spend more time outdoors than simply at the playground. They have a fun Halloween event every year.
Why I like it: It's convenient, spacious and offers several different activities in one location. For Solana Beach families, it's a great park to have nearby for an after-school outing or an easy weekend trip.
3. Powerhouse Park Playground | Del Mar
Location: 1658 Coast Boulevard, Del Mar
Best for: Playground + beach + ocean views
It's hard to beat a playground with the Pacific Ocean as its backdrop. I think this is one of the most beautifully settings for a playground I have ever seen.
Powerhouse Park sits along the Del Mar coastline and features a children's playground surrounded by expansive grassy areas, picnic tables and spectacular ocean views. The park is also directly adjacent to Del Mar's beaches.
Why I like it: This is a great choice when you want a playground outing to feel like a mini beach vacation.
Combine the playground with a walk along the coast, a trip to the beach or a visit to Del Mar's downtown shops and restaurants.
4. Glen Park | Cardiff-by-the-Sea
Location: Glen Avenue, Cardiff-by-the-Sea
Best for: A relaxed neighborhood park
Glen Park is a local Cardiff favorite and a nice option for families looking for something a little less like a destination park and more like a neighborhood gathering place.
The playground is surrounded by open space and recreational amenities, making it a good spot for a casual afternoon or an after-school play session.
Why I like it: It has the relaxed, community-oriented feel that makes Cardiff such a desirable place for families.
5. Cottonwood Creek Park | Encinitas
Location: 95 N. Vulcan Avenue, Encinitas
Best for: Nature-loving kids
Cottonwood Creek is one of those parks that feels distinctly different from a typical suburban playground.
The park combines a children's play area with a creek, pedestrian bridges, mature landscaping and open areas. Kids can play on the equipment and then explore the natural environment around the creek.
Why I like it: Kids get a little playground adventure and a little nature exploration in the same visit.
6. Olympus Park | Encinitas
Location: 701 Olympus Street, Encinitas
Best for: Adventurous kids
Olympus Park is one of my favorite North County playgrounds for kids who want to climb, slide, ride and explore.
There's a children's play area, large turf hill, skate feature and pump track, basketball and pickleball courts, dog park and picnic areas.
The turf hill is particularly popular, and kids often bring cardboard to slide down it.
Why I like it: It doesn't feel like a traditional playground. There's something here for kids who have outgrown simple swings and slides.
7. Moonlight State Beach | Encinitas
Location: 400 B Street, Encinitas
Best for: Playground + beach day
It's tough to beat a playground that's steps from the Pacific Ocean. Despite not being the closest, this is the playground my family uses the most.
Moonlight State Beach has a playground, grassy areas, picnic facilities, restrooms, showers, fire rings and volleyball courts. Getting an ice cream or shave ice at the snack bar is my kid's favorite way to end the day.
The playground has a fun surf-inspired feel that fits perfectly with its Encinitas setting.
Why I like it: This is the playground to choose when you want to turn a quick trip into an entire beach day.
8. Encinitas Community Park | Encinitas
Location: 425 Santa Fe Drive, Encinitas
Best for: Families with kids of different ages
Encinitas Community Park is one of the most versatile recreation destinations in North County.
The large park includes a playground, sports fields, skatepark, walking paths, dog park and picnic facilities. My kids love to play with their soccer balls here.
Why I like it: One kid can play on the playground, another can skateboard, and the adults can walk the park or relax nearby. It's an especially good choice for families with children who don't necessarily want to do the same thing.
9. Pacific Highlands Ranch Community Park | Carmel Valley
Location: 5977 Village Center Loop Road, San Diego
Best for: Active kids and modern play
Pacific Highlands Ranch Community Park is a great option for families in Carmel Valley and the surrounding communities. The park offers children's play areas, a discovery play garden, sports facilities, skate features and a pump track.
Why I like it: It's particularly good for kids who like to move. The combination of playground, wheels and sports makes it easy to spend a significant amount of time here. I challenge my kids to a long running race in the field to wear them out at the end of their playtime.
10. Alga Norte Community Park | Carlsbad
Location: 6565 Alicante Road, Carlsbad
Best for: The ultimate all-in-one family park
Alga Norte is one of the best destination parks in North County. There is so much to do! Easy parking.
The 32-acre complex includes a large playground, splash pad, aquatic center, skatepark, dog park, sports fields, basketball courts and picnic areas.
Why I like it: There is enough here to keep children of very different ages entertained. If you're looking for a park where you can easily spend an entire afternoon, this is one of my first choices.
11. Poinsettia Community Park | Carlsbad
Location: 6600 Hidden Valley Road, Carlsbad
Best for: Families looking for space and multiple activities
Poinsettia Community Park is another large Carlsbad recreation complex with a playground, sports facilities, tennis and pickleball courts, picnic areas and a dog park.
The playground has separate areas designed for younger and older children.
Why I like it: It has a more relaxed neighborhood feel than some of the destination parks while still offering plenty to do.
12. Stagecoach Community Park | Carlsbad
Location: 3420 Camino de los Coches, Carlsbad
Best for: A large community park with something for everyone
Stagecoach Community Park is another excellent addition to the Carlsbad playground lineup.
The recreation complex offers multiple play areas, open lawn, sports facilities, walking paths and other family amenities.
Why I like it: For Carlsbad families, this is a great everyday park with enough variety to keep it from getting boring.
13. Oceanside Harbor Playground | Oceanside
Location: Oceanside Harbor
Best for: Playground + beach + harbor outing
Oceanside Harbor Playground is a smaller playground, but its location makes it worth adding to the list.
Located near Harbor Beach and Oceanside Harbor, the playground can easily be incorporated into a larger family outing. After playing, families can walk around the harbor, watch the boats, head to the beach or enjoy a picnic. The harbor area also offers walking paths, picnic areas and plenty of opportunities to explore the waterfront.
Why I like it: This is a good example of a playground where the setting is almost as important as the equipment. You can combine playground time with a beach and harbor adventure. We frequently drive here while my son naps and then let our daughter out to play until he wakes up.
Parent tip: Plan for sun exposure, particularly during the middle of the day, and consider combining your visit with another Oceanside activity.
14. Maruta Gardner Playground at Bonita Cove | Mission Bay
Location: 1100 W. Mission Bay Drive, San Diego
Best for: Playground + bay day
This is one of the most memorable playgrounds on the list.
The Maruta Gardner Playground sits inside Bonita Cove on Mission Bay and features climbing structures, slides, swings and rope elements.
The bigger attraction is the setting. Kids can play at the playground, explore the waterfront and enjoy the large grassy areas and picnic facilities at Bonita Cove.
Why I like it: It's a destination playground where the surroundings are just as appealing as the equipment.
15. Tecolote Shores North and Tecolote Shores South | Mission Bay
Location: East Mission Bay Drive, San Diego
Best for: Inclusive play and waterfront recreation
Tecolote Shores South is one of the most impressive playgrounds in the San Diego area.
The newer playground emphasizes inclusive and accessible play, with accessible pathways, sensory elements, inclusive swings, a wheelchair-accessible carousel and ziplines.
And when the kids are finished playing, Mission Bay is right outside the playground.
Why I like it: This is one of the best choices when accessibility and inclusion are important considerations for your family.
16. Children's Park | Downtown San Diego
Location: 326 W. Harbor Drive, San Diego
Best for: Combining the playground with downtown attractions
Children's Park is a unique urban playground located near San Diego's waterfront and The New Children's Museum.
The renovated park features climbing structures, slides, lawn areas, fitness equipment, game tables and a pedestrian walkway around Civic Pond.
Why I like it: It's a great option when you're already heading downtown and want to give the kids an opportunity to run around.
17. Gallagher Square | Downtown San Diego
Location: 840 K Street, San Diego
Best for: Baseball fans
A playground inside Petco Park? Yes.
Gallagher Square is a 2.8-acre outdoor space within the Petco Park complex with a large playground, lawn areas and family-oriented recreation.
It's particularly fun to combine with a Padres game, although access can vary depending on the Petco Park event schedule.
Why I like it: It's one of the most unique playground experiences in San Diego. Where else can you take the kids to a major league baseball stadium and have them spend time on a playground?
A Few More North County Playgrounds Worth Knowing
There are plenty of smaller neighborhood playgrounds throughout North County, but these are a few I'd keep on your radar.
Scott Valley Park | Encinitas
A smaller neighborhood park that received playground improvements focused on inclusive play. It's a good option for families who want something quieter than some of the larger destination parks.
Ocean Air Recreation Center | Carmel Valley
A particularly good neighborhood playground with separate play areas for younger and older children, plus open space, a walking loop, picnic tables and bathrooms.
Leo Mullen Sports Park | Encinitas
Another useful option for families, particularly if you're looking for a combination of playgrounds, open space and sports facilities.

For a quick, easy outing close to home, La Colonia Playground and Powerhouse Park are two excellent options for Solana Beach and Del Mar families.
