Del Mar in late July belongs to the racetrack. Friday first post at 2 p.m., shuttles running every fifteen minutes from Solana Beach Station, Camino Del Mar's pubs booked solid, the fairgrounds humming from Thursday through Sunday. If you live here, you already know the rhythm of the meet, which runs July 17 through September 7 this year.
The Summer Twilight Concerts are the counterweight. Four Tuesday evenings at Powerhouse Park, presented free by the Del Mar Foundation, on nights the fairgrounds is dark. Two of those Tuesdays are already gone. Two are still ahead: July 28 and August 11. This is a short guide for residents who want to make both of them count.
The thesis, in one sentence
The concerts are the only summer gathering in the Village where the crowd is entirely local. No paid gate, no meet-day traffic diverting off I-5 at Via de la Valle, no tourists working through a checklist. The lawn at 1658 Coast Blvd fills with the people who actually live within walking distance of it. That is the reason to go, and it is also the reason a poorly planned arrival can cost you the evening.

Doors are effectively "whenever you want to arrive." Concertgoers can put blankets and low chairs on the grass starting at 8 a.m. the morning of the show, per the Del Mar Foundation's posted rules.
How the lawn actually works
Powerhouse is a sloped oceanfront green, not an amphitheater. There is no fixed seating, no ticketing, no food vendor. Three details separate residents who enjoy the show from residents who spend it apologizing to a neighbor:
- No tarps. They damage the grass and block access. Blankets and towels are capped at 10 feet by 10 feet.
- Low-back beach chairs only. Anything with a tall back puts the person behind you in a sightline standoff.
- Nothing is policed. Personal items are left at your own risk, so the 8 a.m. blanket drop is a genuine trust exercise with your neighbors.
Barbecues are discouraged because of the crowd density and the pitch of the lawn. Dogs are welcome on leash under standing City of Del Mar rules for Powerhouse Park.
Parking, when the meters fill by 5:30
The single most useful thing to know about a Twilight Concert is that there is no dedicated parking. Here is the working hierarchy, roughly cheapest to most convenient:
- Civic Center parking garage, free, entered off 10th or 11th Street. About a six-minute walk down to Coast Blvd.
- L'Auberge Del Mar meters, $3.00 per hour, entered from 15th Street just east of the Post Office.
- LAZ Parking's Seagrove Park Lot, paid, directly across from the venue.
- Rideshare drop-off on the east side of the 1600 block of Coast Boulevard, which the Foundation formally designated to keep the surrounding blocks passable.
If you live in Beach Colony or the Village and can walk, walk. If you are coming down from Del Mar Heights or the Mesa, the Civic Center garage is the honest answer.
Why the Tuesday date matters
Look at the calendar for the two remaining shows against the 2026 Del Mar racing meet.
- July 28 (Tue): Between the previous weekend's Bing Crosby Stakes and the following Saturday's $400,000 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes. Fairgrounds dark. Village restaurants breathing.
- August 11 (Tue): Eleven days before the $1 million Pacific Classic anchors a Grade I card on August 22. Again, dark day at the track.
The scheduling is not accidental. Racing runs Thursday through Sunday across the meet, with the meet's operator publicly confirming the Thursday-through-Sunday plus Labor Day schedule for 2026. Tuesdays are the exhale. It is the one weeknight all summer where the Village is not absorbing overflow from the fairgrounds, which is precisely why the concerts fit there and why a Tuesday-night dinner reservation in Del Mar is easier to get in August than any Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
For residents, that has a practical implication most visitors miss: the concerts are the best low-friction night to introduce out-of-town guests to the Village. No hats, no $1,051 Seabiscuit Society tickets, no valet crush at the Grandstand. Just a lawn, a horizon, and a band.
Dinner after, in a post-Sandbox Village
The dining picture has shifted enough over the last eighteen months that it is worth stating what still works within a short walk of Powerhouse. Set times on the concerts wrap by roughly 9 p.m., which is late for a Del Mar Tuesday, so plan accordingly.
- Poseidon on the Beach stays open through the summer schedule and sits close enough that you can watch the sunset finish from the deck if the set runs long.
- Il Fornaio at L'Auberge is the reliable choice for a table that will seat a party of six without a two-week lead time.
- Jimmy O's, Sbicca, and Monarch Ocean Pub along Camino Del Mar are all within a fifteen-minute walk. They see their busiest weeks during racing, per local coverage of the meet, which means a Tuesday walk-in is realistic.
- Rancho Valencia Resort hosts the official Opening Day after-party for the meet, and its dining rooms are one option if you want to prolong the evening beyond the Village. It is a drive, not a walk.
The point is not the list. The point is that a concert Tuesday is the rare summer night when you can eat at any of these without preplanning a week out.
Rules of thumb for the two remaining shows
A short checklist, since the previous two Tuesdays proved which mistakes were common:
- Drop your blanket sometime between 8 and 11 a.m. Do not stake more than the 10x10 the Foundation allows.
- Pack in, pack out. The Foundation asks for full carry-out and recycling.
- Bring a warmer layer for the featured set. The ocean breeze on the bluff sharpens noticeably between the 7 p.m. main and the 8:30 closeout.
- Walk or ride if you can. The 1600 block of Coast Blvd will look like a rideshare queue by 9:15 p.m.
- Say hello to the volunteers under the tent by the stage. The people running these nights have been doing so, in one form or another, since Mayor Lou Terrell helped launch the series in 1983 out of Seagrove Park, before Powerhouse existed.
The through-line
Buyers touring Del Mar in July almost always come for the racetrack story. They leave with an impression built on Opening Day hats and Grandstand views. Residents know that story is the exception. The rule is Tuesday. A lawn, a low chair, a picnic that fits on a blanket you can pick up in one motion, and the same neighbors you saw at the farmers market Saturday morning. Two more Tuesdays are on the 2026 calendar. Use them.
